📋 Key Rules for 2025
Business miles: Must be for business purposes — commuting to a regular office does NOT count. Going between job sites or to client meetings does.
Recordkeeping required: Log date, destination, business purpose, and miles for each trip. Keep mileage logs; the IRS requires written records.
Actual expense method: Instead of the standard rate, you can deduct a percentage of all actual vehicle costs. Calculate both methods — actual can exceed standard for high-cost vehicles.
Medical miles: Only deductible if you itemize. Subject to the 7.5% AGI floor along with other medical expenses.
Charity miles: Fixed at 14¢/mile by statute — Congress has not indexed this rate for inflation since 1998.
